    VANTUG Event ~ January 18, 2011
The migration from XP to Win7
    Speaker: Charlie Russell, MVP

The seminar, for lack of a better term, went well and had a great turnout. Charlie, although he jumped around a lot and wasn't descriptive enough in his demonstrations, did hang in there (even when his PC failed to cooperate with him when trying to show us demos, three times). In all fairness the deck (PowerPoint slide show) wasn't his and he had to go through and short form it all. Feel for ya Charlie -- must not have been your night -- kudos to you for not giving up and delivering the information you did. All in all the information was well worth the time and I'm glad I didn't miss it.

On an even better note, one thing that was shown at this event was the use of Lite-Touch and its benefits; in particular, its capabilities in assisting you when migrating your computers from XP to Win7.

The Lite-Touch, High-Volume Deployment strategy is for medium-sized organizations that have an information technology (IT) staff and sometimes use partners to help with technology adoption. Organizations that use this strategy have 200–500 client computers and at least one location with more than 25 users. They usually have managed networks in distributed locations that are running Windows Server.

Medium-sized organizations often assemble their own deployment solutions by using the tools and technologies that Microsoft provides for the Windows operating system. These solutions typically include combinations of answer files, scripts, the Windows Automated Installation Kit (Windows AIK), and so on.

Such organizations can benefit from the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) 2010, which is a solution accelerator that is available at no cost. MDT 2010 contains thousands of lines of code that were developed by Microsoft employees, partners, and customers. You can use this code to provide a deployment framework for Windows operating systems, which enables you to focus on your business, not on programming.
After attending this event and seeing how easy it is to keep your data in the process of migrating from XP to Win7, I personally wish I had a spare system to test this on to see for myself. I ask that anyone who has the chance to try this and if they do in fact go with Lite-Touch, please feel free to leave feedback here -- good or bad. I am interested in knowing.

The event was packed with more people the usual, VANTUG is getting bigger and there is more participation happening. In a recent community promotion testing Azure the tech group rocked with numbers 10 fold over the other guys. W00t!

As Ozzy mentioned the event was subject to the wrath of the Demo Gods, Charlie Russell whom grew the crowd did his best thoughout as always. Great job!

I enjoy my local tech group and encourage others to see what user groups are in their community, get out there, check them out to see if they're your kind of crowd.
